Matthew McConaughey's New Stoner Comedy Has Career-Worst Wide Opening For The Actor

Matthew McConaughey is one of the biggest names in Hollywood, but not everything he touches turns to gold. The actor's newest film, The Beach Bum, opened this weekend--and it seems like it may be a flop. The stoner comedy featuring McConaughey in the lead role made $1.8 million at 1,100 theatres across the United States and Canada. That works out to an average of $1,636 per theatre, according to Entertainment Weekly . It's a career-worst opening for McConaughey when you look at wide releases, or films that opened at more than 1,000 screens. His previous low wide release was 2017's Gold, which made made $3.4 million from 2,166 screens, according to The Wrap . The Beach Bum was directed by Harmony Korine, who previously directed the more successful 2012 film Spring Breakers. The Beach Bum also features Snoop Dogg, Zac Efron, Jonah Hill, Martin Lawrence, and Isla Fisher. McConaughey won the Best Actor Oscar for his performance in Dallas Buyers Club. As for movies that did

Disney's New Dumbo Movie Has Weak Opening; Full Top 10 Box Office Report Revealed

Disney's latest live-action adaptation of an an animated classic didn't have the strong start that the company might have wanted. The movie opened to a huge figure this weekend, taking in an estimated $45 million in the US and Canada this weekend to stand easily at No. 1, but it didn't make as much money as people expected it to. EW reports that it was projected to bank between $50 million and $58 million for its domestic opening-weekend. At $45 million, it's substantially below other recent live-action Disney movies such as Beauty and the Beast ($174.8 million), The Jungle Book ($103.3 million), and Cinderella ($67.9 million). Dumbo, however, is not nearly as big or recognisable a franchise as Disney's other marquee series, so it was never likely to make as much as those films. Dumbo was directed by Hollywood legend Tim Burton, and it cost around $170 million to make. It features a star-studded cast with the likes of Michael Keaton, Danny DeVito, Eva Green, and

r/Games Is Closing For April Fool's Day, And Here's Why

r/Games, one of the biggest gaming communities on the internet, is closing on April Fool's Day. In a message posted on the popular subreddit today , mods explained that they're taking things "a little more seriously" this year, and that means closing down /r/Games for the day. "In recent times, it's come to our attention that what has been intended to be a forum for the potential spread of knowledge and involvement in video games has instead become a battleground of conflicting ideas," the mods explained. "Ordinarily, this isn't an issue; discussion by its very nature is certain to bring argument, but when that argument descends into vitriolic attacks between individuals on a regular basis with no chance at deescalation, that's when, put simply, something’s got to give." The mods went on to say that r/Games is becoming "increasingly responsible" for perpetuating the "combative and derogatory schools of thought" sur

Godzilla: King Of Monsters Aims To Put The "God" Back In "Godzilla"

Fans at Wondercon were treated to an extended look at Godzilla: King of the Monsters, featuring the awakening of King Gidorah from his icy prison as Vera Farmiga and Millie Bobbie Brown look on from the relative safety of a military base. As Gidorah breaks out, he uses his lightning breath to obliterate soldiers--just in time for Godzilla to arrive on the scene. Of course, the footage cuts before the two can actually clash--but not before Gidorah gets to strike an incredibly iconic pose with his wings and three heads splayed for full effect--and, trust us, it looks and sounds absolutely amazing. Even for someone not completely steeped in vintage Toho lore, there will always be something awe-inspiring about a giant, golden, three-headed dragon in any context at all, let alone facing off against the world's most famous reptile. The context of the scene made it look like Godzilla was coming to the rescue of the humans, but director Michael Doughtery explained that the everyone's

New "Annabelle Comes Homes" Trailer Shows Why You Shouldn't Play With (Haunted) Dolls

The iconic Chucky--next set to be played by Mark Hamill --wasn't the only haunted doll that made an appearance during this year's WonderCon . Warner Bros. dropped the new trailer for the next Annabelle movie, Annabelle Comes Home, during its panel at the convention in Anaheim, California. Watch it below to see what's new in the third Annabelle movie, the latest chapter of the connected Conjuring universe to be revealed: In the trailer, a friend of the Judy Warren's (Ed and Lorraine's daughter) very unwisely disturbs the ghost-busting duo's private hoard of spooky nicknacks, and the results go about as well as you'd expect. Annabelle Comes Homes is the third movie starring the Annabelle doll as its main antagonist, although she's also made appearances in other Conjuring universe movies-- and beyond . Other than what's in the trailer above, we don't know a ton of details about Annabelle Comes Home, besides that Gary Dauberman (writer of the pr

Crash Team Racing Nitro-Fueled Will Include Tracks From The Sequel Nitro Kart

The remaster for Crash Team Racing channels much of the same energy and cartoonish personality that made the classic PS1 title such a well-loved game. Developed by Beenox, Crash Team Racing: Nitro-Refueled also manages to go a bit further than updating the original, including more content than people had anticipated. During PAX East 2019 , we spent some time racing on the different tracks in Nitro-Refueled, which included the return of some tracks found from the sequel Nitro Kart. Speaking with GameSpot at PAX, Beenox co-studio head Thomas Wilson described the approach they took with the remaster, and what sort of content they wanted to include with the game. "With the name Nitro-Fueled, we wanted to see how we could complement the original experience," said Wilson. "We did that by adding new tracks that originated from Crash Nitro Kart, and which we decided pretty early on we were going to do that. We felt it was the right decision, and it was all about creating a mo

PAX East 2019: Exclusive Trailer For Stylish 2.5D Stealth Game, Liberated

Atomic Wolf, the indie developer behind the Bomberman-like Mad Age & This Guy , has given us a first look at a new title called Liberated during PAX East 2019. In stark contrast to the studio's previous effort, Liberated is a stylish, narrative-driven 2.5D stealth game inspired by noir films and graphic novels. Set in a bleak, dystopian future where the government is using technology to surveil and manipulate the public, Liberated tells the story of a group of characters who cross paths with the authoritarian police force and a violent opposition group fighting against it. The narrative is framed like a graphic novel; the game is divided up into four chapters, which are presented as four comic book issues, with story and gameplay sequences unfolding across different panels. Throughout the course of the game, players will be faced with choices that will affect how the story is shaped and lead to entirely different endings. Among other things, players must choose whether to coo

PAX East 2019: Why Monster Hunter-Like Dauntless Is Coming To Epic Games Store Instead Of Steam

Earlier this year, Dauntless developer Phoenix Labs announced it is moving the free-to-play Monster Hunter-like RPG from its own launcher to the Epic Games Store , joining a string of other high-profile games that are skipping Steam for Epic's new storefront. According to the studio, one of the primary reasons behind the move was Epic's player-focused philosophy and its experience in offering cross-play and cross-progression between different platforms. "One of the things that we're passionate about at Phoenix Labs--and was a part of our vision even before we had chosen to build Dauntless--was finding a way to allow players to play together," Phoenix Labs co-founder and VP Robin Mayne told GameSpot at PAX East 2019. "And so a part of our strategy for Dauntless has been worldwide servers so you can play with anyone wherever they are. "And then as we thought about our platform expansion, it was really important for us to fulfill our vision of one Dauntl

Sega Reveals Mario & Sonic At The Olympic Games Switch And Three Other Olympics Titles

Sega has announced a range of video games for the Olympic Games being held in Tokyo, Japan next year. Among them is Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020, a Switch title that will once again reunite the characters from Nintendo and Sega's most iconic franchises to compete in sporting events. However, Sega also has Olympic Games: The Official Video Games in development for PS4, Xbox One, PC, and Switch. There's also an arcade version of Mario & Sonic At The Olympic Games Tokyo 2020, and Sonic At The Olympic Games -- Tokyo 2020. These games are showcased in a trailer, which you can watch below, albeit briefly. Obviously, the main differences between the various titles is whether or not they have Mario or Sonic attached to them. Sega is making a standard Olympics video game available on all platforms, and this is currently listed as coming 2020 on the game's official website . Mario and Sonic will join in on the competition for Switch and Arcade, with the S

Marvel TV Head Teases Future Of FX's Legion Beyond Final Season

FX's Legion panel at WonderCon 2019 kicked off with an exclusive look at the upcoming Season 3, which the network has stated will be the show's final season . The clip was from the new season's opening episode. The lengthy footage starred a new addition to the cast in Season 3, Lauren Tsai, who plays a character named Switch. The clip didn't have a lot of dialogue or many clear connections to the story as we know it, although we can infer some things. We essentially followed a day in Switch's life: She eats breakfast with her father via teleconference on the screen of a 1960s style TV (the show remains era agnostic, as always), she goes to school, she listens all day to an audiobook called "Lessons In Time Travel." In the footage, we only got one glimpse of her using that power--as she encounters increasingly strange coincidences throughout her day, including mysterious flyers posted around the city, she eventually tunes a radio to a specific station t

Valve Is Slowing Artifact Updates To Handle The Game's Larger Issues

Valve has announced it will slow down on pushing out updates for Artifact in order to start focusing on the digital card game's larger issues. The company published a blog post on Steam explaining its reasoning. "Obviously, things didn't turn out how we hoped," Valve game programmer Jeep Barnett wrote. "Artifact represents the largest discrepancy between our expectations for how one of our games would be received and the actual outcome. But we don't think that players misunderstand our game, or that they're playing it wrong. Artifact now represents an opportunity for us to improve our craft and use that knowledge to build better games." "It has become clear that there are deep-rooted issues with the game and that our original update strategy of releasing new features and cards would be insufficient to address them," Barnett continued. "Instead, we believe the correct course of action is to take larger steps, to re-examine the decis

WonderCon: New Dark Phoenix Footage Sends X-Men To Space, Shows A Massive Fight

The X-Men came to WonderCon and they brought some pretty massive treats with them. To promote the upcoming movie Dark Phoenix , the cast of X-Men shared some brand new footage at their WonderCon panel. Beware: The following contains spoilers for Dark Phoenix. All told, there were two different--and lengthy--clips shown. The first, which clocked in at around 10 minutes, sent the X-Men to space. Pieces of this sequence have been seen in trailers, but there's quite a bit more context to be had. As it so happens, the X-Men are tasked with rescuing a NASA shuttle, which was struck by the Phoenix Force, essentially leaving it dead in the water. Though she ultimately absorbs the Phoenix energy--and it looks very cool--it's not just Jean (Sophie Turner) getting in on the action in space. The clip shows just how great a team the X-Men has become, with everyone knowing their role and working together. The clip also shows Mystique (Jennifer Lawrence) calling the shots in the field, givi

Crash Team Racing Nitro-Fueled Reintroduces Tracks From The Sequel Nitro Kart

Mortal Kombat 11 On Switch Doesn't Compromise What Matters Most

The announcement of Mortal Kombat 11 wasn't much of a surprise, but the word that it would be appearing on Nintendo Switch alongside PC, PS4, and Xbox One certainly was. In part because the ultra-violent series has had a checkered history contrasted with Nintendo's family-friendly image, and in part because the series has recently turned into a fidelity-pushing powerhouse, the Switch wasn't an expected home for NetherRealm's latest gore-fest. Following hands-on time at PAX East, it feels perfectly at home on Nintendo's hybrid platform, even if the visuals are predictably downgraded. The port isn't being handled in-house, instead having been handed off to Miami-based Shiver Entertainment with NetherRealm overseeing production. The mission given to the studio was apparently to make sure it runs smoothly at 60 FPS. While we didn't verify the exact frame rate, the message came through clearly: the priority was the fighting mechanics themselves. Shiver succee

No Elder Scrolls 6 Or Starfield At E3 2019, Says Bethesda

Bethesda has announced that it will not be showcasing or revealing additional details for either The Elder Scrolls VI or Starfield during E3 2019. Both games were announced and given tiny teasers during E3 2018, alongside more detailed reveals for Fallout 76 and Rage 2 . "That's just a little sneak peek at the technology that we've been building," Bethesda executive producer Todd Howard said during a PAX East panel , in regards to further details about a new game engine . "People are going to see [the tech] at first, actually, in Starfield. And so that tech will have like the second version of it in TES6, and--before everyone asks--please be patient. It's going to be a long time. It's not something we're going to be talking about at E3--either of those games--this year. And so patience, please. But given the [Elder Scrolls] anniversary, we did want to give everybody a taste." It's not that much of a surprise to hear that neither game wil

X-Men: Dark Phoenix Star Reveals How Major Death Affects His Character

While traditionally, blockbuster sequels tend to keep major spoilers like character deaths a secret, the cast of Dark Phoenix has no problem discussing a major death in the upcoming movie. During an interview, Nicholas Hoult was open about how said character's death affect his role of Beast. Warning, there are spoilers for the movie ahead. During an interview at Wondercon, the cast of Dark Phoenix were open to discussing that a major character will die in the movie. Hoult, who has played Beast in all four of the new X-Men movies, starting with First Class, explained how the death of Mystique affects his character. "[Director Simon Kinberg] told everyone that Raven dies, and that's the relationship that's been culminating in these last few movies for the Beast role," Hoult explained at a roundtable interview. "So that was obviously an emotional moment. And the catalyst for Hank to depart being with Charles and the X-Men and seek redemption and revenge in diff

Big Star Citizen Update Launches Soon

Star Citizen 's been trudging along since it debuted on Kickstarter in 2012. Initially seeking $500,000, Cloud Imperium Games' space-sim closed its Kickstarter campaign after accruing a little more than $2.1 million in November 2012. Some years later, the studio's first game has exceeded well over $200 million--and the numbers keep going up . Now it's announced the game's biggest update should blast off this weekend. Titled Alpha 3.5, the update includes a new city-planet, overhauled flight models, and additional character creator options. The new planet is called ArcCorp, a planet with two moons that's "almost entirely covered in man-made structures." Players will be able to visit the Area18 landing zone where you'll find an NPC quest-giver who will dish out new missions. Alpha 3.5 takes gravity into consideration, as it's factored into planetary flight. Further, the update adds a new map called Star Marine for the squad FPS mini-game, new

Red Dead Redemption 2, Country Trap, And The Cowboy Meme Explained

On the morning of March 29, 2019, a Red Dead Redemption 2 AMV was shown on the news program Good Morning America . You might not have heard of it if you don't browse TikTok, the short-form video platform colloquially known as "cursed Vine," but that music video has, as of this writing, nearly 16 million views on YouTube and counting. It got over 80,000 views in the time it took to write this article. The song, "Old Town Road" by rapper Lil Nas X, is at the center of both an explosively popular cowboy meme and country music drama, and it also slaps. It shot up the Billboard Hot 100 list and on Spotify and iTunes, reaching #1 on global Apple Music by March 26. It was so popular that DJs had to rip it from YouTube in order to play it on the radio. All the while, RDR2 was wrapped up in the hype--Lil Nas X tweeted on March 13 that Rockstar Games had followed him , and when he was signed by Columbia Records, he was welcomed using the Red Dead font . "Old

Hyper Light Drifter TV Show In Development With Castlevania Producer

Indie studio Heart Machine, founded in 2013, received a great deal of acclaim after Hyper Light Drifter releases in 2016. The 2D action-RPG found its way to the Nintendo Switch two years later with a host of new content , and now studio founder Alx Preston has revealed a TV adaptation. According to a report by Polygon, Hyper Light Drifter will receive a TV series from Castlevania producer, Adi Shankar. Preston told Polygon that he and Shankar are actively developing the TV adaptation. No writer has been confirmed, but Preston and Shankar are actively seeking writers to lead the project. There's also the matter of translating a semi-open world game to a TV show where there's no interactivity with the viewer. "The difference between a series and a game is vast in a lot of ways. Hyper Light [Drifter] as a game was pretty atmospheric and kind of overbearing at times," Preston said. "For a series, the question is: how do you sustain and keep your attention on a no

Borderlands 3 Trailer Released; Here Are Our Impressions

Gearbox has finally confirmed the existence of Borderlands 3 , and even revealed a new trailer for the long-awaited sequel to one of the studio's most beloved franchises. In the video above, GameSpot video producer Jean-Luc Seipke and associate editor Jordan Ramée voice their impressions of the new trailer after watching it. Fans of the original Borderlands , Borderlands 2 , Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel , and Tales from the Borderlands: A Telltale Series , both Jean-Luc and Jordan are happy to see several beloved characters return in the trailer for the new game. Most notable is an adult Tiny Tina, who was still 13-years-old in Borderlands 2: Tiny Tina's Assault on Dragon Keep, but the return of characters from Tales from the Borderlands is a welcome surprise. There are plenty of other familiar faces as well, such as Sirens Lilith and Maya (the latter of whom is now sporting longer hair), Ellie, Marcus, and Sir Hammerlock. Although the sight of so many beloved Borderlands ch

The Most Mind-Boggling TV Show Twists, Ranked

One of the biggest challenges for any TV writer is how to keep the audience coming back for more. This isn't a problem that filmmakers have--sure, they have to get people in theater in the first place, but once they have your money, the deal is done. Television is different--shows continue week after week, season after season, and without a compulsive storyline, audiences will quickly look elsewhere. And never has this been more true than now, with so many shows appearing on so many different channels and services--how can TV creators keep their audience loyal and engaged? The plot twist plays a valuable part in this. While the twist has long been a part of cinema, it played less of a part in TV until relatively recently. However, it is now is an essential weapon in the showrunner's storytelling arsenal. A twist can take several forms. It can be a sudden reversal that changes everything we thought we knew about a storyline. It can be surprising character moment, where a chara

Ubisoft Confirms Its E3 2019 Press Conference Will Go Ahead

Conversely, Microsoft is holding a conference , while Bethesda has already confirmed the date and time of its usual presentation. It's not yet clear what Ubisoft has to share at E3 this year, as many of the publisher's 2019 games--including Far Cry: New Dawn , Trials Rising , Assassin's Creed III: Remastered , and The Division 2 --have already launched, while Anno 1800 is scheduled for release on April 16.
