PlayStation Experience Won't Happen This Year

PlayStation won't be holding its annual PlayStation Experience event this year, worldwide studios head Shawn Layden has confirmed. He said that the company reached the difficult decision based on where it currently stands on several projects, and didn't want to set expectations for a high-profile media event like PSX without much to show.

"We won't have it in the States this year," Layden said on the PlayStation Blogcast. "Now that we have Spider-Man out the door, we're looking down into 2019 games like Dreams and Days Gone. But we wouldn't have enough to bring people all together in some location North America to have that event. We don't want to set expectations really high and then not deliver on that. It was a hard decision, but we have determined that this year we will not hold PlayStation Experience."

This comes on the heels of a notably smaller E3 from Sony this year, which focused squarely on four games: Spider-Man, Death Stranding, The Last of Us: Part II, and Ghost of Tsushima. It featured a few surprises like debut trailers for third-party games like Control and Resident Evil 2 as well. The PlayStation Experience (PSX) debuted in Europe in the early 2000s, then went dormant for years before coming to the United States in 2014. It's been held every year since until this one.

Spider-Man has been a massive success for Sony, having broken records set by God of War only months earlier. Meanwhile, Dreams looks to be an incredibly ambitious project, and Days Gone, not so much.
