The Walking Dead Director / Effects Specialist Joins Spawn Movie

It's becoming quite a big year for the upcoming Spawn movie. Things are slowly starting to push forward, and now, The Walking Dead's director and special effects artist, Greg Nicotero, has come aboard and will define the look of the character.

Nicotero has worked in the movie industry for decades, doing makeup for such classic horror movies as Evil Dead II, Wes Craven's New Nightmare, From Dusk Till Dawn, and more. However, many people know him for his current work on AMC's The Walking Dead. The guy is masterful at creating zombies. Now, he'll be dealing with anti-hero demonic, super-powered beings.

The upcoming Blumhouse feature will be directed by Spawn creator Todd McFarlane. He and Nicotero--along with his company KNB EFX Group--worked together on the 1997 Spawn feature film, so McFarlane has a lot of faith in his work.

"I'm a long-time fan of Greg's work and the projects his company, KNB have done throughout the years," said McFarlane in a press release. "Working with him once again, to re-invent the Spawn 'look' so it will match the supernatural theme in the movie, is going to be a fun process."

Nicotero will be joining Jeremy Renner, who is playing Detective "Twitch" and Jamie Foxx, who takes on the titular role of the film. The new Spawn film will not be an origin story, as McFarlane recently stated, "I've seen too many movies that spend way too much time for the set-up." The director is also planning on making this a hard R-rating and will avoid having his main character crack jokes, unlike another R-rated superhero franchise.

Spawn is expected to release sometime in 2019.
