The Invisible Woman Is Latest Universal Monster Movie In Development

Universal's plans for its catalogue of classic monster movie characters has been unclear for a couple of years, following the failure of The Mummy and the collapse of its Dark Universe series. But it seems that the studio is focusing on more modest, standalone horror and creature features. Following the recent trailer for The Invisible Man, which hits theaters in February, it's been reported that Elizabeth Banks is in talks to direct and star in The Invisible Woman.

According to Deadline, Banks pitched the movie to Universal which has put the project into development. The current draft of the screenplay is by Erin Cressida Wilson, who previous wrote the 2016 hit The Girl on the Train. Banks is best known for acting in movies such as The Hunger Games and Brightburn, as well as directing Pitch Perfect 2 and the the recent reboot flop Charlie's Angels.

There was an earlier version of the The Invisible Woman, released in 1940, which was the second sequel to 1933's original adaptation of HG Wells' The Invisible Man. While plot details for the new movie are currently unknown, it has been reported that Banks will be the one turning invisible.

As for the new version of The Invisible Man, it stars Elizabeth Moss and Oliver Jackson-Cohen and hits theaters on February 28. Beyond that, it was recently reported that Universal is developing a movie based on the character of Dracula's henchman Renfield, to be helmed by Rocketman director Dexter Fletcher. In addition, Bridesmaids director Paul Feig recently revealed that he plans to make a movie for Universal titled Dark Army, which he has described a "modern day version of a monster movie."
